Habitat and Behavior

The Large-Eyed Pit Viper is primarily arboreal, meaning it spends much of its time in bushes, small trees, and low branches. It is mostly active at night, when it hunts for frogs, lizards, small birds, and rodents. During the day it often remains motionless among leaves, relying on its camouflage to avoid detection.

Although venomous, this species is generally not aggressive. When disturbed, it usually remains still and relies on its camouflage rather than attempting to attack. Most bites occur when people accidentally touch or grab the snake.

Venom

The venom of the Large-Eyed Pit Viper is primarily hemotoxic, meaning it affects blood and tissue. Bites can cause pain, swelling, bruising, and problems with blood clotting. While fatalities are uncommon, all bites should be treated as medical emergencies and require immediate hospital care. Fortunately, the snake's calm nature means that encounters rarely result in bites when people give it space.

Encountering One at the Camp

Guests occasionally spot Large-Eyed Pit Vipers around limestone cliffs, forest edges, and vegetation near the camp. They are most often seen at night while hunting or resting on low branches. Their bright green coloration blends perfectly with surrounding leaves, making them surprisingly difficult to notice.

If you encounter one, simply admire it from a safe distance and avoid any attempt to touch, move, or photograph it too closely. These snakes play an important role in the ecosystem by helping control populations of rodents and other small animals.
