How the development in Mueang Fueang started.

Two years ago, a handful of climbers stood beneath an iconic wall in Mueang Fueang ເມືອງເຟືອງ and decided it deserved bolts.

Pha Thong ຜາທອງ is one of the most striking limestone formations in northern Laos. From a distance, it looks as if a giant knife blade has been driven straight through the valley floor. The wall dominates the landscape and is visible from far away, drawing the attention of anyone passing through the area. What followed was not a commercial project, nor a government initiative. The development was carried out by climbers for climbers. Every bolt on the wall was paid for by the developers themselves. During weekends, holidays, and any free time they could spare, they returned to the cliff. Loose rock was cleaned, vegetation removed, access trails established, and route after route equipped by hand.

The development is still young. Many routes have only recently seen their first ascents, and there remains plenty of potential for future exploration. Pha Thong is only one example of the enormous climbing potential that still exists in northern Laos. Across the country, countless walls remain untouched, waiting for someone to put in the time and effort to transform them into safe climbing destinations.

The hardware alone represents a significant investment, and most developments are financed entirely by the climbers doing the work. Information about the climbing area

The climbing area lies a short distance from the main road. Access is part of the adventure: take a kayak across the water to a small jungle pier, then follow a short trail to the base of the crag. The area feature both single-pitch and multi-pitch routes on impressivle vertical walls.

Plan to spend anywhere from a few days to a week to fully enjoy the climbing here. A highlight of the area is the large bat cave, best visited at sunset, located approximately 5km from the campsite.

Getting to Mueang Fueang

From Vientiane by car, follow the Lao-China Expressway and exit at Hinherp. Continue towards Meuang Feuang and drive 20km to reach the dirt road leading to Pha Thong campsite. GPS coordinates: 18°31'38.0"N 101°57'25.6"E. Minivans run between Vientiane's Northern Bus Station and Meuang Feuang bus station. It is often possible to arrange a direct drop-off at the campsite for a small additional fee – negotiqte with the driver. However, having your own transport 9motorbike or car0 is recommended, as there are no restaurants or shops at the campsite.
